ENGLISH COURSE IN CANTERBURY




From the 30th of March to the 7th of April, 48 students from 2º and 4º ESO levels, accompanied by five teachers, participated in one-week English course in the town of Canterbury, England. The course took place in Concorde International School.

In Canterbury, we stayed with English families. We attended lessons in the mornings and in the afternoons, we did different activities: a city tour including a visit to the cathedral, an afternoon quiz, a treasure hunt in the city, visits to the Beany and the Canterbury Tales Museums. One afternoon, we went to Broadstairs, a charming seaside resort on the Kent coast. We walked in the beach and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

On Saturday, we travelled to London by train. First, we went to the British Museum. Then, we did a walking tour and visited some of the most famous landmarks: The Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben, Downing Street, The House of Guards, Wetminster Abbey, Saint James Park, Buckingham Palace, Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus. We also had time for shopping.

It was an unforgettable experience. We made new friends, practiced our English and learnt new aspects of the English culture. We had a lot of fun!

CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL


On Octubre 30th, the teachers of the Bilingual Programme organized different activities to celebrate Haloween. 1º and 2º ESO students participated in them.

The activities began in the third period.  While in the interior yard some students participated in “ The hot pumpkin” and “Wrap the mummy” directed by the English teachers, other students participated in “Score the pumpkin basket” and “ Hoops and pumpkins” organized by the PE teacher in the gym and in the assembly hall others danced in the Halloween ball coordinated by the Music Teacher.

In the sixth period, first year students participated in the activity “ Mad Challenge”, organized by the Maths teachers. Divided in groups, the students had to solve several maths problems to be persons again as two witches had enchanted them and turned them into pumpkins.

Students enjoyed the activities a lot, they had fun and use English at the same time.

“ On the 30th of October, some activities related to Halloween took place in the institute. 1st and 2nd level students took part and had fun.
The activities were:
-         Pumpkin ring toss game: In this game you had to throw a ring to a cone with a pumpkin. There were two teams, which aimed to measure the air in the cone.
-         Basketball: There were also two teams, as in the previous activity. The team which was faster hitting the ball won the game.
-         The hot pumpkin: we had to pass a hot plastic pumpkin while the music was playing. When the music stopped, whoever had the pumpkin in his hand lost the game until there was only one student left.
-         Wrap the mummy: This activity consisted in the wrapping of a student in toilet paper, making him/her look like a mummy.
-         Musical activity: For this game the students were supposed to wear black clothes with paper bones glued to them. There were two parts. In the first one, we listened and sang the Addams family song. In the second one, we had to dance a skeleton´s song.
It was a funny and scary hour!”

ENGLISH CAMP MAY 2018



From the 2nd to the 4th of May 2018, twenty eight 1º ESO students participated in an English camp in Foz (Lugo, Galicia).
The objectives of this out-of-school activity were to promote values such as cooperation, sportsmanship, independence and environmental awareness as well as improve students’ fluency in English.  
During the camp, the students did a lot of activities, all developed in English, such as games, quizzes, workshops. They also practiced sports like surf and paddle surf.

ENGLISH COURSE IN KILKENNY (IRELAND)


From the 18th to the 25th of March, 47 students from 2º and 4º ESO levels, accompanied by six teachers, participated in one-week English course in the town of Kilkenny, Ireland. The course took place in Mackdonald Language Academy.

Students stayed with Irish families. They attended lessons in the mornings and in the afternoons, they had a complete programme of sport and cultural activities and visited some of the key tourist attractions in Kilkenny such as the Castle with its beautiful gardens or Saint Canice’s Cathedral.

On Saturday, we travelled to Dublin where we went sightseeing and also did some shoppings.

Students had the opportunity to make new friends, practice their English and learn about Irish culture. We had a lot of fun!

CULTURAL CONFERENCE AND THEATRE AT SCHOOL

On the 16th of March, students from the Bilingual Section attended a cultural conference about the USA in the school assembly hall. In a motivating and dynamic way the lecturer explained different aspects of the culture and history of the USA. On the other hand, the English company Moving On performed two plays in our school onthe 28th of March. The Trans-European Express was the title of the first one. This performance was atended by 1º ESO students and the 5th and 6th level students from La Vallina and La Canal Schools and from CRA Cabo Peñas. 2º, 3º and 4º students participated in the second one : Fortune´s Fool. Both plays were very entertaining and students had the opportunity to practice their English in an amusing way. Here you can see some photos of these activities.

1º ESO ENGLISH CAMP


From the 17th to the 19th of May, 1º ESO students participated in an English Camp that took place in Foz (Lugo). The objectives of this activity were to improve students’ skills in English, practice sports, promote values such as cooperation, independence and environmental awareness.

In the camp, the students participated in a lot of collaborative activities, all developed in English, (games, quizzes, workshops...). They also started practising surf and paddle surf.
They had a great and unforgettable experience.

BILINGUAL STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN THE CULTURAL WEEK

Students from the Bilingual Section participated in the Cultural Week that took place in our school from the 24th to the 28th of April 2017.The topic of this year´s Cultural Week was cinema.
In Music, students made posters on the history of music in films.
In Technology, students prepared index cards of essential films in the history of cinema.
In Physical Education, students prepared presentations and performed scenes of different musicals: The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Grease, Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean
Students also participated in the Music festival “Crisolywood”, singing and playing different songs and performing the song “Over the rainbow” from the film The Wizard of Oz, together with the Music teachers.
Our assistant teacher, Angie Ward gave an interesting talk to the 4º ESO students about Hollywood and the history of cinema.
2º, 3º and 4º students participated in the 4th Interdisciplinary Conference that was held in the school assembly hall and gave talks related to cinema. In Music, 2º ESO students talked about the soundtracks of the following films: The Pink Panther, Harry Potter, The Sound of Music and Indiana Jones. In English 2º ESO students talked about Woody Allen and Robin Hood films. 3º ESO students´talks were: The Oscars Awards, World War Films, The Big Bang Theory. 4º ESO students presented their projects on the following topics: Make- up in films, Romance films, Harry Potter films, Bollywood and 2017 Releases.

ENGLISH COURSE IN DUBLIN (IRELAND)


From the 7 th to the 13 th of March, 2º and 4º ESO students and four teachers travelled to Dublin to do an English course. The school we attended was Atlas School located in Portobello, quite near Dublin city centre.

We stayed with families, so we could get an idea of the Irish way of life. Apart from the classes, we also did different activities in order to practice English and get to know Dublin. For example, a treasure hunt, a selfie night or an Irish dance class. We also went cycling in Phoenix Park, one of the biggest public parks in Europe.

On Saturday, we visited Howth, a fishing village situated in Dublin bay. We went there by train and we walked around the village, the harbour, the viewpoint, the old church and cemetery. We also went shopping in the local market.

Sunday was the day to be with our families. On Monday we visited the Trinity College, the oldest and most famous University in Ireland. A Philosophy professor working there was our guide and we could learn a lot of facts about the origin and the present of this wonderful university.

It was a great and unforgettable experience for all of us. We practiced English, made new friends and had a lot of fun.

SAINT VALENTINE´S CARD COMPETITION

The Bilingual Section and the English Department organized a Saint Valentine´s competition. Students from 1º and 2º of ESO had to write a Valentine´s card while 3º and 4º of ESO students´ task was to write a love letter ( 120- 150 words).

The 1º /2º ESO winners were: Deva Fidalgo ( 1º ESO C) and  Carmen Muñiz ( 1º ESO B).

The 3º/4º ESO winners were: Alba Medina and Miguel Díaz, both  from 3º ESO A

ENGLISH THEATRE IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL

On January 13th, the company “Moving on” came to our school to perform two plays. The fist one, intended for beginners, was entitled “A class act” and the second one, for intermediate students, was “ Change the channel”. The performances took place in the school assembly hall.

The 5º and 6º grade students from Gozón Primary Schools (La Canal, La Vallina and CRA Cabo Peñas) participated in the first performance together with 1º ESO students, while the second performance audience was made up of 2º, 3º, 4º ESO and 1º Bachillerato students.

In both plays the actors performed two funny stories, making students participate, come up to the stage and act in front of an audience who clapped and enjoyed both plays a lot. It was a great opportunity for students to improve their oral skills in English in an entertaining way.

ENGLISH COURSE IN BROADSTAIRS (KENT, ENGLAND)

This year our English course took place in Kent School. The school is located in the town of Broadstairs, county Kent, England. It took place from 12th to 18th of June. Thirty- eight students from 2º and 4º of ESO and four teachers participated in the course.In Broadstairs we stayed with families. In the mornings, we attended classes while in the  afternoons and evenings we had different kinds of activities (karaoke, sports, barn dance, workshops, quizz games, cinema…). We also visited some nearby towns such as Margate, Ramsgate and Canterbury.On Saturday, we spent the whole day in London. First we took a boat from Greenwich to Westminster so we could see London from the River Thames. Then, we went sightseeing. We saw the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and Saint James`s Park where we had lunch. In the afternoon we went to Westminster Abbey, the Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and we stopped in Picadilly Circus for shopping. Later we walked through China Town and we got to Covent Garden where we also had some free time. We spent the night in a hotel near Stanstead Airport and we took the flight back to Asturias early in the morning.It was a great and unforgettable experience for all of us. We practiced English, made new friends and had a lot of fun.Here you can see some pictures of this activity.
